The 6 types of world..
The Game is Afoot: Chapters 1-4
Arguably one of the easiest chapters, a great place to take your time, learn crafting recipes, acquire lots of food for the next chapter.
The game begins with 10 days of Winter, followed by Spring, then summer and so on. Ideally acquire the 'things' and prepare for the next world before summer, simply because summer is a pain in the ass!
The starting location is abundant with basic resources, and food like berries, rabbits, carrots.. Additional food may be found on the bridges; quite a few Tallbirds will be on one of the bridges. They are a brilliant source of food (2 meat), and they respawn in 2.5 days! If you are very hungry, you can eat their eggs too!
Day time is 1 segment, as is night time, evening takes the rest of the time.. Therefore pigs rarely stay put long enough to use them in any way! Spiders will almost always be out of their nests.. Sanity will decrease during the lengthy evenings.. On the plus side, torches, campfires and other light sources are not needed so much!
You'll need to pass obstacles on the bridges on your way to finding 'things', wear a log suit. Watch out if you're running past clockwork bishops as they hit hard, ranged and are very accurate! Spider nests can be burnt down with a torch, the spiders will be left homeless and are easily picked off.
Archipelago: Chapters 1-4
The seasons pass much like they do on survival mode, completing the level before dealing with the harsh winter or summer may be a good idea!
You start in grassland with a nearby marsh. Gather as much logs, twigs and grass that
the island has. Food can be found in the marsh from dead Merms fighting tentacles.. gather a lot of food before going through the wormhole.
Explore each island and use the divining rod to pick up 'things,' every island but the starting island will have a 'thing', and one island will have the 'wooden thing.'
Keep track of where the wormholes are and which are linked, draw circles (islands) and write the numbers in the circles (1 here leads to 1 there... 2-2... 3-3 etc.)
Be aware of the food, and the basic resources you have.. If you are running low you may have to backtrack to islands to gather more food, wood, grass, etc.!
One island will have killer bees. Lure them away from their nests then run back and burn the nest down with a torch! Then just pick off the homeless killer bees; making the island safe to travel through!
Sanity could be an issue on this map because of the 15 penalty each time you jump in a wormhole! Although there will be an island with a lot of flowers (and bees).. Picking flowers will give 5 points of sanity, and the petals can help you make garlands as well.
A Cold Reception: Chapter 1-3
The seasons change very quickly in this chapter, so you have to deal with the rain in spring, heat in summer, and freezing in winter! Autumn is the calm season..
There will always be at least one resource which is very rare.. Be aware of which basic resource is scarce, and try and build strategy around it.. E.g if twigs are scarce, use a miner hat instead of a torch at night. Building a miner hat will save you twigs and grass from crafting torches.. Using a network of fire pits rather than campfires will help too! If grass is dead, you will need to re fertilise it, find manure from Beefalo, feed pigs vegetables and petal for manure, rot can be used as fertiliser too! Also, if resources are scarce, traps may be very expensive.. Instead lure rabbits with carrots before killing them or use the magnificent walking cane to outrun them and two hit kill for an easy morsel!
Pigs will help keep you sane, and provide food (as you will know giving them 4 monster meat will turn them into a Werepig, which drops 2 meat and a pig skin on death.) As there is a lot of rain on this chapter, there will be 'frog rain'. Recruit pigs to fight frogs in cold reception. A good tip is to run away from your base during the 'frog rain' so they don't annoy you at the base, if you try to kill one they will all come to attack you causing a lot of inconvenience, sometimes fatal! An umbrella will resist 90% of the rain. Remember you can dry off quickly by standing near a fire with an umbrella equipped when the rain eases off to dry yourself! Total wetness will drain sanity in minutes so be prepared to fight shadow monsters if that happens!
Campfires, fire pits, and their endothermic counterparts will be needed. Remember you need to prototype endothermic fires on the alchemy station!
Basic insulating clothing will be helpful for winter, dapper vest, winter hat! Just like King of Winter, travelling in freezing conditions will be difficult, though having multiple fire pits/camps may help deal with this! A lightning rod will he very helpful in the rain during Spring if you are around your base so that the lightning doesn't destroy valuable things!
King of Winter: Chapters 1-4
Definitely one of the most challenging chapters, maybe even more challenging than Darkness if you are unprepared. This world may be your first world, in that case you got the short straw!! If you can survive this world it is a good indicator that you will go all the way!
The constant snow requires constantly burning trees or campfires as you look for 'things', and essential resources.. Grass tufts take longer to regrow, over 3 days! Wilson and Webber have the upper hand in this chapter with their tier 2 insulating beards. Light trees on fire and warm up on King of Winter, and also use less materials on campfires, Willow benefits greatly from this.. staying as close to flame as possible to maximise heat gain; and drop the thermal stone as close to the burning evergreen as possible to maximise heat. Having the hottest campfire provides 80 heat.. Lighting a stray evergreen provides 225 heat and a large burnable object provides 180 heat! So you see it is only wise to light things on fire when travelling to regain heat than building a campfire..
King of Winter has only a small daytime, the rest is dusk and evening which can take a toll on your
characters sanity.. also, pigs will be out for so little that it becomes difficult to get much use out of them!
MacTusk is the most important part of King of Winter. Hunting MacTusk, will give you hound teeth for the dapper vest (as insulating as the rabbit earmuffs, plus a 3.3 sanity gain per minute), valuable blow darts (which can be used to kill another MacTusk in 2 shots), the walrus tusk for crafting the walking cane. Lastly, the Tam o Shanter is a tier 2 insulating clothing, and is also one of the best dress items in the game giving over 6 sanity gain per minute; which is in fact the highest sanity gain dress you get! MacTusk respawn at their igloo in King of Winter, you require at least a log suit to fight them. To kill them chase them until they run a certain length then they'll turn and walk back, this is your chance to deal a few hits with you spear to kill them (only a few hits!). Dodging blow darts is hard, and without armor they will kill you very quickly.. Use the sewing kit to repair the Tam o Shanter.. Bringing the Tam o Shanter to subsequent chapters may be useful, because they can't be crafted, only MacTusk has a chance to drop them.
Beefalo can be found in King of Winter, shaving them at night and using 4 Beefalo wool and 4 silk. There will probably be at least 1 obelisk blocking access to where a 'thing' is or where Beefalo are, storing up green mushrooms is good to change your sanity (uncooked decreases sanity, and cooked increases it!), also look for nightmare flowers, digging graves, eating monster meat. Pigs can be used to regain sanity if needs be (and sleeping, eating jerky, wearing the Tam o Shanter).
