Survival mode is fun to play, and a great place to learn game mechanics. Adventure mode puts those skills to the test!

Wilson main character

Guiding principles:
Collect and store enough food and basic materials (wood, grass, twigs, nitre), use ways to control your temperature (especially for King of Winter), craft/find armor and weapons for protection. Collect the 4 things..  Prepare for next chapter

Essential items:
Thermal stone, walking cane, log suit, spear,  miner hat, Tam o Shanter, chester (eye bone)
Ice box, pig house, bird cage

Secondary items:
Fishing pole, dapper vest, umbrella, sewing kit, football helmet, boomerang, lightning rod, rain coat

Common sense items:
Pre-build campfire, fire pits and their endothermic counter parts, tools, alchemy engine

Preparing for chapters:
The 1st chapter you will have your unique items spawn with you, Wigfrid's Battle spear and helmet, Woodie's axe.. After the first chapter the only items you start with are the 4 you choose to bring with you.. (you can't bring Chester/eye bone). Personal choice is the thing to remember. As Wigfrid I bring some meat, walking cane (crafted in King of Winter!), Tam o Shanter (again from King of Winter) and a miner hat (which I rate very highly.) Depending what character you are playing, and what worlds may potentially be coming, bringing items should complement your character and play style.
  Other items I like are, the spear, log suit, Winter hat, Beefalo wool, pig skin. Pre-building is a good help, hammering your ice box, crock pot, alchemy engine and a pig house before you
leave the chapter will give you most of the materials you need to pre-build them again! This is particularly useful if you can't find a gear for the ice box, hammer your current one! Make sure to pre-build campfires, fire pits, endothermic camps and fire pits for the next chapter. Starting with a winter item is helpful both on King of Winter and The Game is Afoot.
